Everyone Else

I have this week off from school so I picked up a couple shifts on the ambulance.  I was on one of the floors for a discharge to a nursing home and bumped into my old therapist who I still keep updated on things in my life.  He knew I was pregnant with Maggie but the last time I emailed with him was before Christmas and obviously a lot has happened since then.  I felt really awkward seeing him when I've been meaning to email him a zillion times and never manage to get around to it.

Then later, his office called about my appointment tomorrow with another clinician (who prescribes my Celexa) needing to be rescheduled stating his wife had her baby.  I felt like I was kicked in the gut, the uterus to be exact.  I knew he and his wife were expecting so it wasn't completely out of the blue but it still took me by surprise to hear it so causally on the phone.  I guess it's not really for the receptionists to know what my issues are and reasons for my office visits.

Later my boyfriend stopped by work to see me and I told him about it and started crying.  It works out for everyone else.

I wish I was still pregnant with Maggie.

Why Would It Now?

So, it's been a while. A lot has happened in the last month. I've been seeing a therapist again after my melt down in December. I'm not convinced it's really helping but like in the past it's nice to have the hour a week of just me time.

I think the majority of the reason for my meltdown was the feeling it was coming at me from all sides. Pregnancy announcements and births all around. The jealousy monster got the best of me.

With the holidays past things settled down and I feel better. I had planned on trying again this month so I took clomid. I didn't tell my husband just to relieve any pressure from him, but did "jump" him on the appropriate days. It's now day 26 and don't feel like anything exceptional is happening. I wish that I would have miserable morning sickness as a clue, but I've never felt anything other than a twinge of nausea and the occasional metallic taste in my mouth. I thought about testing tomorrow morning just so I could get in for a blood test before the weekend but we're suppose to get a big storm overnight and into the morning so I probably wouldn't even go out. But then why waste a test. Even if it was positive, I couldn't even begin to hope or dream that it would work out.

Why would it now?

In This Boat

Wednesday was a rough day. I was very stressed out for my chemistry test on Thursday. At lunch time I stopped in to see one of my instructors from last semester. I cried in her office and told her about my latest loss. She is such a sweet and kind spoken person I actually laughed through my tears when she exclaimed, "Shit!" Twice as a matter of fact. I don't mind swearing per se, I've sworn plenty depending on the situation, but she just doesn't seem like the swearing type at all so it was surprising and actually pretty amusing. We talked a bunch about what I've been through, specialists I've seen and she automatically starting thinking of other avenues, other ways to get the help I need to actually produce a baby. Her husband is an MD and she teaches all types of biology course so she knows a ton. Later that day she emailed me a link to a website for reproductive immunology. Between this place and the one I previously mentioned in NYC there has to be an answer. I'll hope a little for that.

Thankfully when I got to my chemistry lab shortly after talking to her, I found out we would be having our test as a take-home!! What a relief! I probably asked two or three times if he was serious before I really believed him.

The day only got slightly better with that news though (as evidenced by my previous post). I still feel out of sorts.

Yesterday I decided not to go to work in the afternoon. I have so much going on with school I felt like I was drowning in it. I don't want to list off all the assignments that are due, that would just depress me! So I went home and while this wasn't school work, I went through my medical reports to gather the test results to one place. I'm meeting with my sweet instructor this afternoon to talk about my options more and wanted to have things more in order for that.

I had an appointment with a therapist/NP on Tuesday. She gave me a prescription for Ativan to help me sleep. I'm so glad it works. It sucks so much to go to bed at the same time as my husband and then lie there for a hour or more while he's breathing loud and occasionally snoring. He seriously hits the pillow and is completely out within a minute. Sometimes less. I wish I could do that.

My husband and I went for a walk Wednesday after he got home from work and we talked about baby stuff and what to do. He said we can't do anything about the past we can only look forward. Which basically translates to, "stop crying about the past". That's hard to do. I want to grieve for Samantha, for Sean and especially Isabella during these few day. Extrapolating his philosophy it would be like saying, "My grandfather died yesterday. Ok, enough of that, what's for dinner?" I don't understand why he won't let me or doesn't understand me being sad for a time. As if that is going to influence future results.

So today I go to school for one class, then I'll wait around to meet with my instructor friend and see what we can find in my stack of records. After that, who knows.

Tomorrow is the walk in Northampton. It's also Isabella's 3 year anniversary. I'm sure my emotional week is directly correlated to this milestone. Looking back at that awful time I'm sure I never thought that when 3 years goes by I would still be in this boat. "Childless", miserable, adrift.

Where will I be 3 years from now?

Reflections

There's a woman in my A&P class who sits behind me. We've exchanged greetings on occasion and some small talk but yesterday I had a lengthy conversation with her about school and career goals. I recall back at the beginning of the semester she mentioned something about going to school and juggling her 2 small children and she said to me, "have them when you're young." I'm not completely sure of her age, but I'm guessing she's mid-forties. Class was starting so I smiled and nodded but thought to myself, "that's easier said than done."

But yesterday in our lengthy conversation I made sure to work in my reason for being in school and my multiple losses. I even showed her the pictures I have on my iPod touch of my ultrasounds. She told me about a friend of hers who had also had multiple miscarriages and then saw a doctor in New York City who helped her to carry to term. The woman in my class had her babies by IVF.

I looked him up, checked out his website, read reviews about the book he's written and decided I would call. NYC isn't that far away... no worse than driving to Boston. I have an appointment in July. I could have gotten an appointment in June, but my own scheduling limits me to certain days. They are sending me appointment information and a return envelop so I can send all my medical records for him to review before my appointment. The consultation is a whole hour! Time spent talking to me and my hubby instead of looking over blood work results.

Check it out for yourself!

I know I said I gave up mostly on getting pregnant, but after this last pregnancy I feel like I should either try in a way that is active instead of passive or really give up by means of some form of contraceptive. (I've decided "birth control" is a misnomer. My body does that naturally, I would need something to prevent conception and therefore prevent my hopes from later getting dashed.)

***************************************

I emailed my old therapist yesterday asking if I should make an appointment. I feel sort of ok, but I worry that I might be kidding myself and find myself a few months down the road curled in a ball, quivering and sobbing and wondering where this grief smackdown (as Wifey calls it) came from. So in an effort to be proactive about averting disaster I have an appointment tomorrow.

***************************************

I bought a new purse today. For some reason it's making me happy.

There's Just Too Much That Time Cannot Erase

I made a new video. Mostly because I wanted to share the song I chose for it. I need to go back and add a name once I get the pathology report and know the chromosomes.

I heard this song on the radio the morning of my D&C. It's haunted me ever since.

(Please see Video for updated version.)

Now I've Really Done It!

What has gotten into me? I just posted a "note" on Facebook.

I am now a pregnancy loss spokesperson.

Here is my "note":

"Clarification"

It seems that I've been too confusing and cryptic. I hope that this will clear things up.

Score card: Pregnancies - 9, Live Babies - 0

My husband and I were "expecting" again. I hate that terminology because it's taken on a whole new meaning for me. Was I "expecting" to have another miscarriage? Yeah, I probably was. Did I hope it would work out? Of course. Hope is pretty ridiculous at times. Sometimes I'm so sad and defeated I can't bear to even think about hoping again. And other times I think maybe the next time will be the one that works out.

So, at almost nine weeks pregnant I had the 2nd ultrasound Thursday (4/8) and there was no heart beat when there was a few weeks ago.

I'm scheduled for a D&C.

Aside from this latest pregnancy, in the last 2 years I have been pregnant 6 times. These pregnancies were all considered "chemical pregnancies". It means that I had positive blood/urine tests, but the levels dropped and the pregnancy ended before it could be seen on ultrasound at which point it is considered a "clinical pregnancy". In the grand scheme of things I'm told these don't count. Bull shit. They count to me. Every positive brings new hope, only to turn into heartbreak.

Two years ago (to the day - 4/8/08) I had the ultrasound showing Sean having no heartbeat. It was just dumb luck that I found out that way because otherwise I would have found out in a not so pleasant way the next day. "Products of conception" passed naturally (and painfully) and the D&C was canceled.

The year before that I was pregnant for the first time. I was like any first time pregnant "mom-to-be". Glowing with the knowledge of the new life growing inside me. Shouting it from the roof tops and all that crap that I can't really stand now but smile and put up with because I don't want to be an a-hole. While I'm happy for people who have healthy pregnancies and bear live babies, deep down I'm a bitter, jealous mess. But I wouldn't wish this misery on my worst enemy.

I found out from my first pregnancy that I have a blood clotting problem: antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. Isabella was starved inside me, the placenta a mess of clots, unable to transfer nutrients. She measured as 14 weeks gestation at 18-19 weeks. I never looked pregnant.

Back then I wondered how I would go on. It hasn't been easy. But I'm tired of the taboo. I think mentally I'm in a lot better place today than I might have been if I didn't let it all hang out on Facebook these past few days. I've never done that before and it was like a crushing weight was lifted from my shoulders. Pregnancy loss shouldn't be some big sad secret that's only whispered about like it's something to be ashamed of. It's like I've come out of the dead baby closet. It's obviously not the answer for everyone, it is a very personal loss.

But if you think about it, if you gave birth to a baby and it died from leukemia at 6 months or even if it died at 6 days, people would recognize that loss and console you, even grieve with you. But if the baby dies before it's born it's like nothing happened or is worth mentioning. (Maybe it's not that harsh, but it goes back to what I've said before, people don't know how to deal with death and the inability is just compounded when it's a baby who died.)

Of course I still cry occasionally and it's still hard. But I don't have to pretend anymore. I don't care who knows. I'm not ashamed, nor should I be. In general, I'm in a happier place than I've been in a long time, so maybe that makes it a little easier as well. But like any loss, it takes time. Grief is a process. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I can't stress enough my appreciation to those who have contacted me and shared their stories with me. I feel like we (the reproductively disabled) need to stick together. Other people really don't understand if they haven't been there. It's an exclusive club that no one wants to join.

Results

I heard from my doctor's office. He isn't in today, so I got the call from the craptastic nurse or whatever that I can't stand. I must reiterate that she should not be allowed to have contact with patients like me (the babylost).

The biopsy came back "benign". That means there's nothing wrong with me that they've found yet. So why the fuck is this happening OVER AND OVER AGAIN??

Sorry about that.

I'm so frustrated with my body. I don't consider this good news. It's just another opportunity for invalidation because apparently there are no answers.

My therapist emailed me earlier today about something called PAI 1. He sent me a link to a medical blog or something:

http://www.healthline.com/blogs/pregnancy_childbirth/2007/09/pai-1-polymorphisms-and-recurrent.html

This is the original post that received all the comments from the woman with recurrent pregnancy loss:

http://www.healthline.com/blogs/pregnancy_childbirth/2007/04/recurrent-early-pregnancy-loss-7.html

And a subsequent post following up on the first link:

http://www.healthline.com/blogs/pregnancy_childbirth/2007/10/plasminogen-activator-inhibitor-1-pai-1.html

I don't know if I've been tested for that or not.

I'll have to wait until at least Monday to hear from my doctor to find out what this all means and what to do next.

Should I even bother anymore?

The Good That Will Come

My doctor responded to my email:

Hi Shannon—

I was serious about what I said in the office. The road to medicine is best paved with meaningful life experiences—those are what make doctors more than just number/data crunchers. You’ve been through a lot, and your first-hand experiences would add something to your ability to care for patients that getting a 4.0 at RPI never could, and I think that admissions committees for medical schools know that. That’s not to say that you don’t have to work hard and master unbelievable amounts of material in order to get through medical school—but you take it one day at a time and just do it. It’s obviously not a decision to make on the spur of the moment, but none of the challenges of getting into and finishing medical school are insurmountable or there wouldn’t be any doctors. It’s also not all a bed of roses when you’re done—it’s a lifetime of hard work and demands, but many, many women do it and have families at the same time, so it’s possible, and it’s also a very rewarding career. I wouldn’t worry about the feeling faint around injuries—that’s common and basically you just get used to it.

Hang in there—the future holds good things for you.

Even though I sent that email to him saying I thought it wasn't a great idea I've still been playing around with it in my head. The comments I got helped too. :) I'm looking into my options and what I would need to do so we'll see where this leads me. (I need to sing the "Confidence" song from "The Sound of Music"!)

Last night when I was getting ready to go to sleep I was talking to my husband about all this stuff and a scene from a movie popped into my head. It's sort of a stretch to apply it to my situation but I thought it was interesting. It's from the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" staring Diane Lane. Just for some background (bear with me, I'm going from memory) she's an author who finds out her husband has been cheating on her, she gets divorced and then friends put her on a bus tour of Tuscany, while she's there she buys a house and starts fixing it up. She meets this eccentric (English speaking) woman there and in one scene this crazy lady gives her some advice about meeting a man (since she hadn't been with anyone since her divorce). She said "when I was a little girl I use to run in the fields to try to catch ladybugs and I never could catch any so I would lie down in the grass and fall asleep. When I woke up I was covered in ladybugs." Of course the author woman had no idea what she was talking about so the crazy lady yells at her "just go write your book and forget about it!" (Forget about getting laid, that is.) So of course later she finds this hot Italian guy and they make passionate love and the author woman is glad she's still "got it". She finds the crazy lady in a piazza eating ice cream with a table full of nuns and says to her "lots and lots of ladybugs" then walks off with a big smile.

Applying that to me, I've been so focused on monthly cycles and tracking symptoms and I haven't had anything to focus on or put my energy toward aside from baby making (I use to be involved in lots of church stuff and diabetes fund-raising walks). Not that I think med school would be an easy distraction, but I feel like I've been putting a lot of stuff on hold waiting for a baby to pop out of me. My husband's always said I should work as if I would never go on maternity leave. Unfortunately (fortunately?) engineering doesn't seem the place for me to do that. I've been thinking for a while what else I could do and school was always an option but now I think I'm at a place where I can act like I have all the time in the world to pursue a new path. Not that I'm giving up on having a baby. But I can't stand still anymore or like Heather said in her comment "tread water". And if I do get pregnant and it sticks and a baby comes along 9 months later I can reevaluate at that time. But right now it's time for a fresh start.

Lots of people say "things happen for a reason" and I like to think about different crossroads in my life and how things could be so different if I hadn't made the choices I've made. So while I think it's great that I started working at my current job because otherwise I would never have met my husband, I might not have ever gone into engineering if it wasn't for my cheating high school boyfriend. So even though it sucked that he cheated and we broke up, down the line something good came of it. So like I said yesterday to my therapist maybe this is the good that will come of Isabella's death.

I think that would be an amazing tribute to her.

Other People

All alone again. My husband went away for a guys' weekend. He left Thursday afternoon and came back late Sunday afternoon. He left again this morning, this time for work. He'll be back Thursday evening.

I don't mind really. It's nice to have the house to myself.

My biopsy is scheduled for Saturday. It's a little odd to have a Saturday appointment but my doctor said he would be out on Friday so I could do it either Thursday or Saturday. I chose Saturday so I wouldn't have to take time off from work. I'm waiting to hear back if I can get my yearly stuff done at the same time. I've been avoiding going to the office and cancelled my appointment I had scheduled back in February so I wouldn't have to sit in that waiting room with the pregnant women and huge bellies. I hope the waiting room on Saturday will be big-belly free.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how last year this time I was not going to work and was being medicated for depression. I don't think the meds helped at all. I've been feeling so miserable lately it's like I'm in the same place I was last year. Truthfully, I've discussed this with my therapist and feel like I didn't really need to be on short term disability for depression and not working for nearly 2 months. That may be the case, but I think it really opened my husband's eyes to the pain I was (still am) in. I sort of feel like I'm on the verge of another break down. It's all hinging on this biopsy. I might just flip out if they can't find anything wrong. I have to believe with every ounce of my being that there has to be something abnormal going on with my body (aside from APS). Especially after this last loss (Septimus - my 7th pregnancy) when I thought I had done everything right.

Parts of me still can't believe this is my life. This shit happens to "other people". But to other people I'm one of those "other people".

Pancakes

Regarding the grieving father, he said to me "at least I had 11 years with the most wonderful daughter a father could ask for". I thought to myself it sucks that it was only 11 years. I told my therapist about this and he said "do you think that he would have rather not had his daughter at all?" Of course I don't think that he would have rather not have had his daughter for those 11 years, just that there should have been so many more years from here on out. I've read and heard of many women/couples say that they are glad they had those few hours with their still born baby or the few hours before their baby died in their arms. But for me I had none of that and on top of it a lot of invalidation for my feelings so a part of me can wish that I was never pregnant those times to have those losses because in the end I really had nothing. I never felt Isabella move, I never held her, I never got to see what she looked like, if she would have looked like me or like my husband. And I lost my idyllic perception of my husband's family due to their insensitivity to these losses. The poems I've written (Isabella, Each Day) have multiple meanings as poems like to do. Obviously I can't recapture my innocence, I can't bring Isabella back to life, but I also can't recapture how I use to feel about my husband's family. That has been changed forever. And of course I made a point of referring to myself as Isabella's mother in her poem since my husband's parents made such a point of denying me that title.

A "normal" grieving process supposedly takes a year. I don't think a year of grieving will cover it when your child dies. As long as you live you will constantly be reminded that they aren't there with you, birthdays, holidays, and all the milestones that they should have reached, first day at school, graduations, their wedding day. Your future is irrevocably changed, the road has split to a cruel alternate reality, a living nightmare.

I really wish none of this had ever happened. And when I think that it makes me even more sad that it did. And then I wish I was dead so I wouldn't have to feel this way anymore.

It's Been So Long

It’s been a while. I’ve been pretty bummed out lately and haven’t felt like writing about it on my blog. I’ve also considered taking my blog down and leaving the world of dead baby blogging. It’s still something I’m considering.

Last Friday I noticed a post a friend of mine had made on Facebook saying something about maternity/newborn photo shoots. I gathered that she is pregnant. For those of you who’ve read my blog for a while, she’s the one who was maid of honor at my wedding (almost 5 years ago), but then asked me NOT to be in hers. She’s the one who told me last July that I was too much of a bummer to be friends with and more or less pushed me over the edge into full out depression and 2 months of not working, taking antidepressants and all that unpleasantness. On Saturday morning she called me and left a voice mail confirming that she is indeed pregnant. Parts of the message were garbled but she might have said something about this news being difficult for me. (No shit.) My husband and I were getting ready to go to a party across the state so I didn’t call her back. I know I shouldn’t have let it, but it ruined my whole day. Not one part of me feels happy for her. Mostly I just never want to hear from her again. It seems to me to be exponentially unfair how easy it is for other people. I don’t want suggestions on how I can make myself happy for her or delude myself in any way, but how can I keep myself from being consumed by it? Everywhere I go there are pregnant women, huge bellies, couples with small children, and then there are the comments they make because they have no clue what we’ve been through. At the party a couple we’ve met once before were departing because their kids were getting tired and she said to me “it sucks having kids”. I wanted to slap her and shake her and tell her what really sucks. I’m just filled with a lot of anger. I’m jealous, I’m bitter, I’m at a loss for words to even describe the depths of my misery.

I’m sure that starting my period on Friday didn’t help the whole situation. Not that it wasn’t unexpected, but this is the first normal period since the beginning of April. At least I feel like we have a chance this month. No matter how much I try and what I actually voice I still can’t help but think that it will happen this month. That I will get pregnant and it will stick and then in 9 months I’ll have a healthy baby. I suppose if I didn’t think that then I would have already given up.

At the beginning of May I had an MRI done of my uterus. Because the HSG was inconclusive an MRI was the only way to really see what things look like in there. My doctor called with the results and said that there is basically nothing wrong with my uterus that would cause me pregnancy problems. It was one of those situations when you actually want to hear that something is wrong with your body. I actually hoped that I would need surgery to fix some sort of malady. Instead there are no answers. Just bad luck.

While my husband and I drove home from the party this weekend we had a long talk during the 2.5 hour car ride. Generally speaking my husband has just been going along for the ride <-- ha ha. All the tests are done to me (although he’s nice and comes with me), I make all the phone calls to the doctor’s office and deal with the crappy office staff. He doesn’t question much, but this time he had a lot to say on our baby making mission. He said he wanted to see a specialist, he wanted a doctor to guide us rather than us (me) suggesting a course of action and having my doctor go along with it. I had asked my doctor if I could email him in an effort to avoid some of his office staff so we drafted an email to him to ask him all these things. We mentioned about our trek back in January to an RE an hour away who had nothing for us unless we wanted to do IUI or IVF. We didn’t want to have the same outcome. He’s currently working on getting us an appointment out in Boston. After his last response I’m beginning to worry that it won’t be any different than our January appointment only it will be further away and even less convenient. He said that he can’t guarantee that we won’t have the same experience with another RE. While I can understand that it makes me wonder what the point is. So I asked him. I asked him if there was anything that could be done for us. I asked what he would do if he were in our situation. Now I wait.

When I talked to my husband about my doctor’s email and how we should respond to it and because it sounded so discouraging my husband said “maybe we should just adopt”. He mentioned a long time ago that there was a file cabinet in his office where people leave random paper backs and other books available for people to borrow or keep. There was a book about adoption there. He said to me it felt like a sign to him that it was there in his office where he would walk by it several times a day. So I asked him if that book was still around and that maybe he should bring it home. He replied that it’s already at home, he took it a few weeks ago and that he was waiting until the right time to tell me. He’s apparently had it on his night stand all this time, but it’s on top of or tucked into a tall stack of books and he purposefully had it turned around so that the title didn’t face the bed for me to see. He’s very sneaky. He said he hasn’t started looking at it yet and wanted to give it a few more months to think about it. Depending on the outcome of this month and/or the whole RE referral fiasco we might have to crack that book open sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, we’ll try our hardest this month. I’m taking clomid, I’m going to do some ovulation tests since my doctor suggested waiting until after ovulation to start the progesterone as it might mess things up if I take it too soon. And I’m not going to bother with the lovenox until I get a positive pregnancy test. I know I’ve gotten pregnant twice without taking it, so I have to hope that it can be done again. And even though the bruises have faded I still have nickel to quarter sized marks on my abdomen from the lovenox I took in April. It’s just as well to put that off until I know I need it.

In my attempts to de-stress I’ve gone for a couple massages and I did yoga for the first time on Monday. Tonight I have another massage of the hot stone variety. 90 minutes of pure enjoyment and relaxation. I plan on making use of the whirlpool and sauna beforehand.

All I want to do is retreat into my bubble and not deal with the rest of the world. Not have to react to their comments or pregnancy announcements. To take some deep breaths, sleep without dreams, and find some way to be happy again.

It’s been so long since then.

A Philosophy I Should Adopt:

Options

Today was a crazy day. Very busy at work. Plans to go on two more business trips, one to Georgia this month and back to Seattle next month. My husband suggested as an anniversary present we go to the No Doubt concert in Boston next month so we bought our tickets for that. Things are shaping up to be pretty busy in the near future.

I had my first appointment with my therapist today in a long time. I feel like we barely skimmed the surface of everything that has been going on. I should make a list...

I'm crazy hormonal and my husband and I have been fighting a lot. Tiny little things are annoying the crap out of each of us and then blowing up into shouting matches. It just reaffirms for me that having a baby won't take away these last 2 years, won't erase all the pain, won't make things happily ever after.

My cycle is still all messed up. Sunday was my last day of taking the prometrium, so on cue I had bleeding yesterday and again today, not a lot and not bright red, but it's just more mess to the conundrum that is this cycle. I have no idea what day it is. I got a refill of clomid, but I don't know when to use it. My doctor is on vacation until Monday so I can't possibly get any answers or even educated guesses until then. There's nothing like trying to ask the "on-call doctor" what to do when they have barely looked at your chart and get impatient when you try to explain to them what's going on in your own body because obviously the 5 seconds they've spent on the phone with you makes them an expert on your case. Whatever.

But do I even want to try anymore? With all the fighting, all the disappointment, all the shouting, is it worth it?

My husband listed our 3 options during the hour long drive to the cat heart specialist on Tuesday:
1. Keep trying to have a baby.
2. Start the adoption process to have a baby.
3. Not have children at all.

I can't imagine #3, I'm not ready to even think about #2, and I don't know how much more I can take of #1. To think that I use to look forward to sex, that it was fun, exciting, spontaneous. Now it's just a scheduled chore. I'm disgusted with myself and what my relationship with my husband has become.

Is there an option 4?

Oh, and tomorrow is 2 years for Isabella.
731 days.
17,544 hours.
1,052,640 minutes.
63,158,400 seconds.
I can only go forward, but to what? What can the future possibly hold?

Healing

I just sent out an email to 55 people asking for donations for the walk on Saturday. I can't believe I finally got the courage to do something, anything. I nearly had a heart attack clicking the send button.

Here is the email I sent:

Subject: A New Fundraising Walk

As you may know, for the last seven years (2002-2008) I was an active participant and fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association’s Walk for Diabetes. I have decided to take a break from supporting the ADA so as to focus my efforts toward something closer to home. Don’t worry, I still look forward to a cure for diabetes as it affects my husband's and my life every day.

This Saturday I will be participating in a fundraising walk to raise money for support, resources and information packets for women and couples enduring the tragedy of pregnancy and early infant loss.

I am walking to remember my daughter Isabella, who died 2 years ago this week and for my son Sean, who died last year in April. Even though these two souls never took a breath or felt the sun on their faces, they are missed every day.

If you would like to contribute by cash or check made out to “Empty Arms Support Group”, it can be collected by the end of the day Friday, May 8th. Donations after this week are welcome too. Please let me know if you need my address to send a donation.

Thank you for your support,
Shannon

P.S. If you know someone in Berkshire county who needs support after the death of their baby, no matter how long it’s been, they can contact me for a support group meeting, or just to talk. 841-8063 or berkshire.empty.arms@gmail.com

I feel like I have completely come out of the deadbabycloset now. No more living a double life, no more pretending or hiding.

Maybe this is the healing I really need.

Optimism

Ok, this is Post #100!

I had my meeting last night, I wasn’t expecting anyone to come because I’ve been scattered this past month and didn’t advertise at all. My therapist posted a couple fliers around the hospital and that was it. But one woman did show up. She had her loss about 15 years ago and wanted to find a group so she could lend support to other people going through the same thing. So that was really nice that she came. I told her that I’m planning on holding off on any more meetings until I get more interest, it will just take some time. I’m not sure how much I’ll get done in the next month because I’ll be traveling for work, but I’ll figure it out. Next week this time I’ll be flying into Seattle.

I got all kinds of awesome stuff from Carol yesterday, so I'm going to work on the sorely needed packet upgrade for the hospital in my area. I'm excited about it.

Regarding the "favorites" thing from my previous post, I wanted to elaborate a bit more. After we got back from vacation and on the cusp of renewed baby-making efforts, my husband said to me that he wasn't sure he still wanted to have a baby. He didn't say it in a way that caused me great alarm, but still. What the heck have we been doing for the past 2 years and 8 months! I asked why not and he said because I would love the baby more than him and that with "timed intercourse" he felt like all I needed him for is his sperm. And that he feels like I love our cats more than him. Unfortunately there's some truth to that because we rarely have sex just for the fun of it. And I do pay a lot of attention to the cats. I told him that he's my favorite person and I gave him a big hug and a raspberry on the neck to lighten the mood. (He said I'm his favorite person, too!) I said that I would still love him but I would also love a new baby just in a different way. As for the cats, well, I really love our cats. Especially Katie (don't tell Krista, although she has been more snuggly lately). I think it's because Sasha died and I want to make sure I get all the hugs and snuggles I can because the night before Sasha died we totally ignored her and it makes me really sad that I didn't hug her up as much as I could that last night she was alive. So that's the favorite person story with a little extra on the side. And really, who else do you marry if not your favorite person? (Hurray for Vermont and Iowa!)

I'm starting the new protocol today, I hope it will help things along as well as the HSG helps some too, so I feel like we're starting with a clean slate and I have a new optimism. It's been a long time since I've had that.

HSG Results

I had the HSG today, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm really lucky to have such a nice doctor, I wish I could say as much about his office staff. I also found out today that he got the award this year for being an awesome doctor and when I got to the hospital to go to my appointment I saw a big poster with his picture on it. Very cool.

So the HSG showed that I have all my parts and according to my doctor, after some thought, it wasn't to see if my tubes were blocked but maybe to see if I had a septum or other weird thing going on in my uterus. It didn't look bad but because it's retroverted it was hard to be sure. But seeing as I was pregnant with Isabella for 19 weeks it is probably ok. So he said to try really hard this month and hopefully I'll have some good news soon. ;)

Last week after I talked to my doctor about how to proceed and scheduling the HSG he told me that they now hand out a small packet for women when they have miscarriages, and he said I should make up a flier of some sort to put in there if I want to get the word out about my support group I'm trying to get going. So yesterday I stopped by and dropped of the fliers and asked to have a packet so I could see what they had in there. I thought it was pretty lame. There was a booklet in there about miscarriage and grief stages, but it was pathetic. There were also typos in the booklet which makes it seem even more lame that they couldn't proof read it well enough before printing it (not that it's my OBGYN's office's fault, they didn't publish it). I suppose it's better than not getting anything at all, which is what I got. But I think the thing that would be most helpful is if the doctors, nurses, techs would be more sympathetic. I never had a problem with my OBGYN (he's the best), but other people in the office (specifically that nurse who is horrible on the phone) and the ultrasound tech in radiology at the hospital were plain horrible. Not one sympathetic word from the lot of them. I've heard that the medical community doesn't like to say "I'm sorry" because it might give patients somewhere to place blame in the case of a botched procedure, but when it comes to miscarriage or stillbirth it can make a huge difference. And I don't see how I could blame anyone for what happened to Isabella or Sean.

So it was basically a form letter where they hand write in your name at the top, it lists types of miscarriages, gives some weak sympathy and definition of miscarriage terms. There's a small pamphlet for a visiting nurse association, but no where in that does it say anything about pregnancy loss. And then the crappy booklet. The booklet lists some books or other resources at the end and I wish it listed "Empty Cradle, Broken Heart" because that's one of the better books to read. 3 sad, crappy things. I feel like I need to find better stuff for them to put in there.

Any suggestions?

Flowing Like Water

Vacation is looming closer, I'm starting to get excited and slightly stressed about getting packed and everything done before we go.

I had an appointment with my therapist today which I thought went really well. We talked about a game plan for when I get back from vacation and the advice I've been getting from my new blogging buddy on managing antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. It gives me a little glimmer of hope considering I figured we'd "just try" next month and everything would miraculously work out.

As far as the roller coaster that is my life goes it's on the upswing. I hope it will continue with sun, sand, margaritas and wine flowing like water and a couple much needed massages at the spa on board our cruise ship. It's finally starting to warm up here but it will be just the right medicine to go somewhere tropical and do absolutely nothing but relax and enjoy.

3 days until vacation and birthday.

Fanning the Fire

I got an email from my therapist this afternoon. I have been meeting with him every Tuesday for a while now and this is the first week that we’ve planned on skipping a session. (An attempt to wean me.) It was interesting to hear from him because I had been thinking earlier in the day that the receptionists would wonder where I was.

Not much has been going on lately on my end which is why I haven’t posted in a while. I got myself so worked up over my last post that I probably just needed a rest.

Hearing from him made me think of something he said about therapy leading to more therapy and I wondered if going every week was just fanning the fire. Of course I would feel differently if something crazy had happened or I had some other revelation similar to the one in my last post.

I feel like I’ve been flying under the radar a bit so that’s good. I’ve been reading others’ blogs and commenting here and there, but otherwise I’m laying low.

24 days until vacation and birthday.

Running out of Cheeks

Something came up at my meeting on Tuesday that I hadn't really given much thought to before. My husband's sister is getting married this August and he has said that she will probably get pregnant right away, or at least be trying right away. So it made me think, what if she gets pregnant and has a baby before we do. How much is it going to suck when everyone refers to that baby as the first grandchild? I told him later how I thought of and talked about that with the woman who came to my meeting. He said there's nothing I can do if that's what they say. I realize that there's a chance that I will get pregnant in the months before the wedding and may in fact "beat" her or that she might not conceive as quickly etc, etc. I also wonder how it would go if she had a miscarriage (not that I would wish it on my worst enemy) but I bet it would be a completely different story for them to see their own daughter go through it, I wouldn't assume that they learned anything from dealing with me. But if it does happen that she gets pregnant and I'm not, I'm going to make it clear to my husband that he should tell his family how I feel about who the first grandchild is. It's Isabella. Thinking about it now I find it patronizing that my f-i-l wanted to have "the talk" back at Christmas time but they still refuse to acknowledge Isabella and Sean by name. So I'm probably just setting myself up for more disappointment. And making myself a little crazy in the process. :(

Thinking more about it, I think if that does happen and they behave as expected then they shouldn't be surprised when things are "tense". It will just further reinforce for me that they were patronizing me with the little talk we had back at Christmas. We visit my in-laws considerably less than we did in the years before I first got pregnant and I can only see that amount reducing further if those things transpire. I realize that it hasn't happened yet, but I'm getting so angry just thinking about it. I think that's what frustrates my husband so much is that he thinks they have apologized to me over and over and I suppose that is true, but because we aren't around them all the time it has never sunk in. That or I have serious issues accepting someone's apology. My husband and I had a long talk in the days after this last loss and extended family issues always rear their ugly head. He thinks that because of all the crap my dad put me through is why I can't accept an apology and would rather write someone off as I've done with him. In the case of my dad I feel ok about writing him off because of the years and years of misery he put me, my mom and sister through. I don't have that luxury with my in-laws and aside from this one (albeit major) point, they're not that bad. When I talked to my old priest a year or two ago about what to do about my dad (who at the time was trying to weasel his way back into my life) I was surprised that he thought I should run in the other direction as fast as I could. Surprised because that doesn't sound like the Catholic and supposedly forgiving thing to do. He said "sometimes you run out of cheeks". So that makes sense to me and reassures me that you shouldn't have to go through life dealing with people who treat you like crap. If my husband's parents' "beliefs" that a baby isn't a baby until it's born (yet the opposite is true in the case of abortion) and they continue to dismiss the existence of Isabella and Sean then I think I've run out of cheeks. It's too big of a deal for me to let it slide.

If you expect someone to behave a certain way and they do, can you still be upset about it?

Success!

I had my first support group meeting last night and I was worried that no one would show up, but one did and that’s all that matters. We talked from 7pm until 9:30 and planned on meeting again next month. So next meeting is March 10th (second Tuesday)!

I’m so glad that someone came.

Also, today I got a phone call from a woman asking about my meeting. At first I was bummed out because she missed the meeting last night, but then she said she lives about an hour away so she probably wouldn’t have come. I gave her the information for Carol’s meeting since she lives much closer to her area than mine. I hope she’ll find comfort with Carol’s group and I’m confident she will because Carol is amazing.

Now I need to think of more ways to get the word out about this next meeting and really get after the local paper to print a notice for it. Wish me luck!
