I get the New York Times headlines and other news stories emailed to me everyday. At the bottom of each "Today's Headlines" email is an "On This Day" blurb. Some are more obscure, some are a really big deal: the death of JFK, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the end of prohibition, the passage of the amendment allowing women to vote. This is today's:
On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion.
I hope this decision never gets overturned, because making it illegal won't stop abortions from happening. It's the women who will suffer. It's the women who will die from botched back alley abortions. Making abortion illegal won't save any lives.
I find it interesting that so many health issues that apply only to women are of such hot debate. Like issues of conscience at the pharmacy for distributing birth control pills or the morning after pill. Do any of these pharmacists object to viagra? I doubt it.
So today is a great day in history, it gives women the right to choose. It puts their health and futures in their hands. Not in the hands of politicians, not in the hands of strangers who call themselves "pro-life" yet murder doctors and bomb clinics.
Everyone has the right to choose. That's what I call freedom.

LOVED your post. Many people don't speak about abortions because they are "taboo" or make people uncomfortable.
I have always been pro choice. The years I spent as a social worker confirmed this for me...
I agree with you. Let freedom ring! :)
Thank you for your comment. (And for agreeing with me!) I have always been pro-choice too so I had to write something about it today. I think the reason why it is taboo is because it's such a controversial topic. Sort of why people don't talk about politics or religion in certain company, it may not end well.
I'm not sure if my last sentence was too ambiguous or not. When I said “everyone has the right to choose” I meant that it should always always be legal, but if you’re against it and think it’s wrong then you have the right to choose not to have an abortion. I’ve spoken about abortion and religion before on my blog. If you don’t think it’s right, don’t get one. It’s great to be religious but don’t push your beliefs on others. Those go hand in hand. Believing abortion isn’t right shouldn’t be something others can push on a woman facing that decision. There are many reasons for abortion, it’s a necessary evil. Those pharmacists that don’t hand out birth control pills or morning after pills are kidding themselves. Their actions of preventing a woman from getting that preventative or early medical care are actually doing their part to increase abortion rates. At least that is my interpretation/opinion based on articles I have read.
killing is killing, and it is never right!
You are welcome to your opinion. If you want to rant about abortion and how "it is never right" you can do it on your own blog.
